Buying new cushions and worried they won't fit your swing? Just compare the dimensions of the seat with the dimensions provided on the cushion product page. All you need is a tape measure and 5 minutes. Below, we show you exactly what to measure and which swing cushion size to choose for 3 and 4 people.

Start by removing the old cushions. Compressed filling won't show how much space the frame provides. Measure the frame itself or the textilene seat and write down three numbers.
Seat length: measure between the sides of the frame
Measure the distance between the inner edges of the frame sides, at seat height. Do this at the front edge and at the backrest, and use the smaller result for comparison.
Seat depth: from the front edge to the backrest
Measure from the front edge of the seat to the point where the backrest begins. In PATIO cushions, this dimension is usually 50–55 cm.
Backrest height: from the bend to the top edge
Measure from the seat bend to the upper edge of the backrest. The sum of the depth and backrest height is the width given on the cushion product card. The Frigiliana cushion is 50 + 50 cm, which is 100 cm. The Majorka / Umbria set is 55 + 55 cm, which is 110 cm.
Finally, check where the frame bends and where you will tie the strings. On a reclining swing, the seam or cushion section should fall exactly on the frame bend. If it falls higher or lower, the cushion will wrinkle every time it is unfolded.
With measurements in hand, you will easily fall into one of four categories. These are the most common sizes in the category Swing cushions:
This size is for compact 2–3-person swings, often placed on an apartment balcony. Luna / Kate 130 cm cushions with canopy are 92 cm wide when unfolded, and the set includes a canopy in the same pattern.
This size fits most 3-person swings. The Frigiliana 150 cm cushion is one-piece with stitching down the middle, so you can also place it on a garden bench.
This is the most popular group. Sets usually have a separate seat and backrest, and often two armrests as well. Models differ in depth, thickness, and division, which is why accurate measurement is most important here.
This is the size for wide swings with a lie-flat function.
It is best if the cushion is equal to the seat length or 2-3 cm shorter. One that is too long bends at the sides and rubs against the frame. One that is too short leaves gaps where leaves and crumbs fall in.

Size is not just length. Two 170 cm sets can look completely different, so compare three more things before buying.
What swing cushion thickness will be the most comfortable?
PATIO cushions range from 6 cm (foam wrapped in non-woven fabric) to 8–10 cm (cut flocke sponge). A thicker cushion is softer, but raises the seat and reduces its depth by a few centimeters.
Two horizontal cushions or three vertical ones?
Two cushions are quick to put on and take off, which you will appreciate when frequently hiding them from the rain. A set with a seat and backrest handles unfolding the swing into a lying position better. If you like to read for a long time on the swing, choose a set with armrests.
Strings, pocket, and zippers: how does the cushion stay on the frame?
Check if the strings are at the fold and on the backrest, because then the cushion will not slide off while swinging. In the Majorka / Umbria set, the top cushion additionally has a pocket that makes attachment easier.Cushions with a zipper Venezia / Rimini 180 cm have removable covers that are easier to keep clean.
The name of many sets includes the swing name, e.g. Parma / Milano, Hawaii, or Tora. Then you don't have to measure or guess the size. If you are just choosing a swing, read whether to choose a 3- or 4-person swing.
What size cushion for a 3-seater swing?
Usually 130–150 cm. The exact size depends on the length of the seat measured between the sides of the frame.
What size cushion for a 4-seater swing?
Most commonly 170–180 cm. For convertible swings, also check whether the cushion division aligns with the backrest fold.
Does a 170 cm cushion fit a swing with a 180 cm seat?
You can place it, but there will be about 5 cm of gap on each side. It is better to choose a 180 cm cushion or one shorter than the seat by no more than 2–5 cm.
Can cushions be left on the swing in the rain?
They should be stored under cover or protected during rainfall. Read more in the guide on how to clean and store garden cushions.
